General Review:
The BabyBjorn One is a birth-to-toddler carrier from one of the most well-known carrier brands in the United States of America. Unlike the original BabyBjorn which has a narrow seat base, the One has a adjustable seat base. It has four carry positions: newborn inward facing, older infant inward facing, outward facing, and back wearing. I was able to try three of these with my nearly one-year-old daughter on walks and doing chores around the house (I did not try newborn position).
I was surprised by how intuitive I found the operation, as it has quite a few buckles looks quite complicated at first glance. As with any carrier, I recommend watching the manufacturer’s instructional videos and reading the manual. Helpfully, the carrier instructions are sewn on a tag on the carrier, so they’re never far away. The buckles are a unique design that I have never seen before; they slide into place on top of each other rather than into each other and release with one button versus pinching. The carrier goes over your head, like the original BabyBjorn narrow based carrier, and then also has a waist strap which allows for the wider seat of the One. This is a good option for caregivers who like soft structured carriers, but struggle with reaching the chest/back clip. This is also what allows the carrier to be adjusted just once -- get it comfortable the first time you use it and it’ll be ready to go each time you want to use it. The seat can be narrowed or widened using the zipper on the front panel. For newborn positioning, there is a harness which brings the newborn higher on the wearer’s chest. The shoulder straps are well-padded and comfortable and above all else, this carrier feels *sturdy*. There is no way, once buckled, for baby to squirm or squiggle out or make the carrier feel any less secure.
The different carry positions themselves were pretty comfortable to me except the back carry. The back carry was too low for my comfort. This placement is how the company shows the back carry position and I didn’t find a good way to get her higher. Forward facing puts the child’s center of gravity leaning away from yours, so that isn’t my favorite for long stretches of time but my daughter absolutely LOVED looking out at the world and dancing with me. I also found it difficult to release the buckles with one hand. You need to push in and lift up and if there’s tension on the buckle (because you’ve already released one, for example) this isn’t easy. In addition, getting into and out of the back carry position is not intuitive. I had to watch the BabyBjorn official video multiple times.
I think the BabyBjorn Carrier One is an excellent choice for caregivers who want to buy just one carrier from birth to toddlerhood and don’t want to have to fiddle with adjusting their straps every time they use their carrier. It offers a variety of carry positions and feels super secure when wearing.
