Joanna Malachowsky
Tell us a bit about yourself (where you’re from, what your hobbies are, etc.) I grew up in Columbus, went to college in Indianapolis, and then lived for awhile on the East Coast in the greater N.Y. metro area. I love reading, sewing, and being with my family. What does a day in your life look like with your job/pursuits? I am a full time middle school special education teacher. I work primarily in 7th and 8th grade math classrooms, although I do/have done a little of everything! Tell us about your family (significant other, children, fur children, other pets, etc) I am married to the sweetest, most thoughtful man, Brian. We have a 3.5 year old son, Jeremiah (Miah). We are expecting a baby girl at the end of February. |
Yes, I had some limited exposure to Babywearing, but always felt like it would be a good fit for our family. Jen Lawson (a former CBW Leader) let me try her Beco Gemini and that ended up being our first carrier. We also used a gauze ring sling at the beginning. We didn’t start wrapping until about 6 months in.
What do you love about babywearing?
I have a really cuddly son. Babywearing gave him the security he needed and I was able to maintain my independence! I feel like with a carrier we were able to still do most everything we could do before we had a baby.
Which one of your carriers do you use the most and what do you love about it?
Currently I am wearing very rarely since my big kid wants to do everything “all my byself”! But, when we do go up it’s usually in our Soul Onbuhimo. It’s great for quick ups and downs and super convenient to take along with us even if we don’t end up using it.
Tell us about your main role within the CBW Leadership Team?
My biggest responsibility is coordinating the CBW Photo Sessions.
What additional role(s) do you have within the CBW Leadership Team?
I am part of the fundraising team generally, and I am also part of the social event/outreach committee.
What drew you to become a leader for our community?
After my son was born, I found a lot of solace and support in online and in person support groups. I was really interested in helping other moms find their way into similarly supportive groups of caregivers. I was most interested in helping CBW find ways to be increasingly accessible to communities around Columbus who may not as easily find their way to us.
What activity are you most likely to rely on babywearing to get done?
Anything where we’re out and about! We love the zoo and hikes around our favorite parks.
What skill do you hope to master over the next year? (does not have to be babywearing specific but it *can* be)
I am so excited to build my skills with wrapping during the newborn stage and eventually nursing in a carrier. I can’t wait for baby snuggles!
