Brooke Taylor
Tell us a bit about yourself (where you’re from, what your hobbies are, etc.) I was born and raised in Baltimore, OH and continue to live there with my husband and two daughters on my family’s 75-acre farm. I enjoy the peace and serenity of living in the country, evening bon fires and beautiful sunsets. In general, my family and I enjoy the outdoors. As a family we enjoy camping, hiking, and bike riding. My husband and I enjoy whitewater kayaking, mountain biking and martial arts. What does a day in your life look like with your job/pursuits? Currently, I am a stay-at-home mom. I love and appreciate the opportunity I have to spend my days with my daughters. Prior to staying at home, I worked for a local school district. I have my degree in early childhood education and early intervention and taught preschool for six years before having my oldest daughter and resigning to stay at home. I also worked part time at the local university branch campus as an adjunct instructor. |
Yes, but not to the extent that I later began wearing both of my children. When I was pregnant with Kinsley, I was gifted an Infantino soft structured carrier which I had included on my baby registry, Moby wrap, and Taylormade ring sling (which I didn’t even try to use until she was nearly a year old). I found Columbus Babywearing when Kinsley was a year old and by chance through a friend’s post searching for a baby carrier. It was perfect timing as Kinsley was going through a phase of wanting to be held, and aside from the ring sling, I no longer had a baby carrier which fit her comfortably. At that point I learned about all the different carrier types.
What do you love about babywearing?
Aside from all the snuggles, I love how helpful babywearing is. When Kinsley was young, she had silent reflux and I could only get her to nap being worn or in arms during the day; later as she was older it was the only way to prepare dinner and how we enjoyed long hikes. With Everly, we babywear every day and have since the day she came home from the hospital.
Which one of your carriers do you use the most and what do you love about it?
This question is difficult because I truly love and use all types of carriers and find that certain situations and/or times in my child’s life are best for particular carriers. However, I will say it is a pretty even split between woven wraps and soft structured carriers (SSC). I love the closeness and versatility of a woven wrap and the ease of an SSC.
Tell us about your main role within the CBW Leadership Team?
I am the chairperson for the Social Media and Web (SMW) committee. SMW is responsible for the graphic designs, Facebook events, Google forms, documents and calendar, website, Facebook posts and more. Aside from overseeing the committee, my primary role is to create posts and events on Facebook. So, if you ever wondered who is behind all the Columbus Babywearing posts, it’s usually me.
What additional role(s) do you have within the CBW Leadership Team?
I am a Monday meeting leader and often assist and attend Fri-Yay! I am also a member of the Lending Library, Policy and Procedures, and Member Education and Leader Training committees.
What drew you to become a leader for our community?
Aside from already sharing my love for babywearing with others, it was my sensational love to volunteer and the encouragement I received from others which lead me to apply for CBW leadership. Columbus Babywearing was such a help to me when I needed another option for wearing outside of what I knew for my oldest and has certainly provided many options for wearing my youngest. I hope that as a leader I can continue to pass on knowledge to help members of the CBW community with their babywearing journey.
What activity are you most likely to rely on babywearing to get done?
Hiking is the one activity which I could not do without babywearing. Whether it’s 3 miles or 10, babywearing gets us through. I am also appreciative of babywearing taking care of tasks around the home, running errands, providing essential naps, and keeping up my 3-year-old.
What skill do you hope to master over the next year? (does not have to be babywearing specific but it *can* be)
In the area of babywearing, I hope to master a double hammock. It was not my preferred back carry for my oldest, so it was less practices; however, I hope to become more proficient with my youngest. I would also like to become more versed with different carriers in general. In life, it’s less of a mastery but more of a striving towards living life in the moment and making the most of it, focusing on needs and less on wants, being the best version of me as a wife, mother, daughter, sister, and friend.
